MAGNOLIA’S WERNECKE GEARS UP FOR OFF SEASON

With Season Over Baseball Player Hits Hard Workouts

MAGNOLIA -Weston Wernecke is on a mission for the 2011 baseball season.  His goal is not unlike most high school athletes entering their junior season, which is to have a breakout year at the Varsity level and to get recognized by college coaches and scouts.

“I had a good year at JV last year but I’m looking to compete for a varsity position this year,” said Wernecke, a slick fielding outfielder for the Magnolia Bulldogs of District 17-4A.

“I’m doing everything possible to get to the next level to compete.”

Along with playing over a 100 baseball games a year though the high school and summer select baseball season Wernecke also strength trains throughout the week to combat the rigors of an often grinding summer schedule.

AQUINO’S 2010 PERSERVERANCE PAYS OFF WITH DIVISION 1 OFFER

Stellar Senior Season Brings Commitment from Rice

Houston -

Michael Aquino was a man without a university heading into his senior baseball season.  His dream of playing at the Division 1 level seemed a distant chance after receiving no formal offers after a solid junior campaign with College Park High School.

“I received some initial interest from Texas A&M and Florida State,” said Aquino, “but there was nothing solid at that point.”

While most commitments occur during the athletes junior season Aquino was forced to play his senior season with no guarantees at the next level.

COOK ROCKS U.S. NATIONALS!

Tektonic Athlete Kassidy Cook National Champion in two events

U.S. Diving Championships, College Station, Tx.|

There’s been a tropical storm brewing at the USA Diving Organization the past few years and the Category 5 winds finally blew into College Station, Texas, this week with a thunderbolt force of twists, turns, and pikes.

Hurricane Kassidy made landfall Thursday afternoon as 15 year old Kassidy Cook of The Woodlands High School won the first of two national dive titles with a dramatic series of final dives in the one meter springboard competition to overtake 30 year old seasoned veteran Summer Allman of Lansing, Mi.

Cook followed up her Thursday masterpiece with a combined effort with partner Cassidy Krug to win the synchronized three meter national title Saturday afternoon.

“Kassidy is a shining star within the national diving community and we’re very proud of her and all of our divers here at The Woodlands Diving Academy,” said Kenny Armstrong, one of four coaches at the prestigious club in northern Houston.

It is these traits that have driven the motor of Shukanes through the rugged spring high school season of District 13 -5A and into the wretched heat and humidity of his select team’s campaign each summer.

“He’ll play well over a 100 games this year which includes his school season, the summer, and late into fall with his select team,” said father Jimmy.

CINCO’s ABASCAL TOP TEXAS HS TRIATHLETE

Junior Rodrigo Abascal of Cinco Ranch

Don’t let Rodrigo Abascal fool you with his age.  This 16 year old isn’t interested in X-Boxes, iPhones, or the latest drama on Facebook.  The precocious teenager is the top ranked high school sprint triathlete in the state of Texas according to USA Triathlon and is quickly developing into a star within the regional sections of the Multisport community.

Since arriving in the United States in 2006 Abascal has competed in nearly 30 sprint triathlons regionally and has finished on the podium in all but three.

“Rodrigo is a tremendous athlete who is very dedicated to his sport,” said Dana Lyons, a widely respected triathlete coach in the Houston area and who has trained Abascal since he arrived in the U.S. nearly four years ago.

“His level of dedication and maturity rivals that of the older athletes I train.  He takes his workouts very seriously and is very easy to coach.”

As a young teenager Abascal contacted Lyons while still a resident of his native Mexico in preparation of his family’s impending move to the United States in 2006.

Lyons trains over a hundred members of his club, ranging in age from high level business executives to junior high school athletes.

“We have about a half dozen junior level tri-athletes who will compete on a regional and national basis and they’re all doing great.  I’m also involved this summer with over a 100 junior high school aged girls with a cross country program.”

Recently Finish Strong junior tri-athletes had good showings at triathlons in Sugarland and Little Rock, Ak., with Rodrigo Abascal of Cinco Ranch winning his age group in South Houston and placing 15th overall.

Lyons is also a competitive tri-athlete himself as he will compete in the upcoming Texas Ironman in May as well as other future competitive races.

“I’m not a professional at my age but I compete at a fairly high level,” said Lyons, 52.  I’m currently training for the USAT National Long Course Championships in October which will be in Myrtle Beach.”

HEUERMANN TAKES COMMAND

Justen Heuermann has established himself as the next hot prospect of District 5A-14

Justen Heuermann remembered after his freshman season at Oak Ridge that he would need to have command of more than just his fastball in order to succeed at the Varsity level.  Sharing District 14 with powers The Woodlands, College Park, and Lufkin can be unforgiving to the unprepared and inexperienced.

“Justen knew he was going to have to develop more as a pitcher after his freshman year,” said grandfather Tony.  “He was able to get some great experience on varsity leading into his Sophomore year.”

Having developed command of 4 solid pitches since his freshman season Heuermann has elevated himself as the anchor of the up and coming Oak Ridge baseball program.

KLEIN ROLLS INTO 7on7 WEEKEND

Andrew Santacroce of the Klein Bearcats at the 7on7 tournament in College Station

Continuing momentum from their stellar 2009 football season the Klein Bearcats steamrolled into the weekend of the 7 on 7 State Football Tournament being held in College Station today.  The defending Texas 5A semifinalist swept their 3 games on a muggy July afternoon.

Resembling a high octane touch football game, the 7 on 7 format rewards teams with disciplined pass routes, precision passing, and ball control.  Offensive teams are only allowed to move the ball forward through completed passes with the offense being limited to 5 eligible receivers minus the quarterback and ineligible center.

Defensive schemes are generally geared towards man to man coverage near the line of scrimmage with a cover 2 safety defense for long routes.

“It felt good out there today,” said Andrew Santacroce, Klein’s ultraquick wide receiver.  “We’ve been practicing really hard leading up to this weekend, we’re expecting to do well.”

PARSONS STARES DOWN 2009 INJURY

After a debilitating injury in 2009 Taylor Parsons is heading to William Penn University to play quarterback this fall.

College Park All District Quarterback Taylor Parsons had planned on a typical summer of sun and relaxation in 2009 after a grueling spring schedule of daily football practices and high hurdling through a busy track season.

On the afternoon of May 20, 2009, the last day of spring football practice, he felt a pop while avoiding an oncoming linebacker during the conclusive intra-squad game.  The diagnosis was “Bimalleolar Fracture of the lower Tibia Region.”  The most severe of ankle related injuries.
